When you attend a successful event – be it a corporate conference, a wedding, or a festival – you probably leave talking about the venue, the food, or the entertainment; but behind every smooth-running event is a team of unsung heroes: the audio visual technicians.

At Brown Cow Audio Visual, our technicians play a crucial role in ensuring that everything runs perfectly. Let’s take a closer look at what these hidden heroes do before, during, and after your event.

Before the event: planning and build
Long before the first guest arrives, audio visual technicians are hard at work. Their job starts with understanding the specific needs of your event. What’s the venue like? How many people are attending? What kind of equipment is required? Based on these details, they design an audio visual setup that’s tailored to your event’s unique needs.

Next comes the build. This can involve everything from unloading trucks, positioning speakers and microphones to running cables, setting up projectors, and testing the lighting. It’s not just about putting equipment in place; it’s about ensuring that every component is perfectly calibrated.

The technicians check and double-check everything to make sure the sound is clear, the visuals are sharp, and the lighting is just right.

During the event: monitoring and troubleshooting
Once the event begins, audio visual technicians don’t just sit back and relax – they remain on high alert, monitoring every aspect of the show. Their job is to ensure that everything goes smoothly, and they’re ready to jump in at a moment’s notice if something does go wrong.

Whether it’s adjusting the volume, switching between video feeds, or solving a last-minute technical problem, these professionals are always one step ahead. Their quick thinking and expertise can save the day, often before anyone in the audience even realises there was a problem.

After the event: derig and review
When the event ends and the guests head home, the work of an audio visual technician isn’t over. They carefully dismantle the equipment, load the trucks and leave the venue as if the event hadn’t happened. It doesn’t stop there – they also conduct a review of the event to identify what went well and where improvements can be made.

At Brown Cow Audio Visual, we believe that this continuous learning process is key to delivering exceptional service every time. Our technicians are always looking for ways to improve, whether it’s fine-tuning our setup process or experimenting with the latest technology.

Why does your event need professional audio visual technicians?
You might think that setting up a microphone or projector is something anyone can do, but the reality is that professional audio visual technicians bring a level of expertise that’s invaluable to your event’s success. They understand the nuances of different equipment, know how to troubleshoot quickly and under pressure, and have the experience to anticipate potential issues before they arise.

In short, they’re the hidden heroes who make sure your event is memorable for all the right reasons.

So, the next time you’re planning an event, don’t overlook the importance of audio visual technicians. At Brown Cow Audio Visual, our team is ready to bring your event to life, ensuring that every detail is handled with professionalism and care.

The post The hidden heroes of your event: the audio visual technicians first appeared on Brown Cow Audio Visual Ltd.

Get to know more about Sam from Brown Cow Audio Visual Ltd and how his journey in the event world has developed.

1. How was Brown Cow Audio Visual Ltd started?
I had recently gone freelance back in live events after a 8 year gap. To further my client list and to broaden the type of work the next step was to setup a business.
The name Brown Cow Audio Visual came from when Rachael and I were on honeymoon wondering what to call our business when during a walk in Cornwall we came across a herd of Brown Cows. Our love of cows just made it a great name and it seems to be quite a memorable name too.

2. Why did you choose to work in audio visual?
When I was a teenager I saw a team setting up a large outdoor screen for the UK leg of the Tour de France. It was at that point that I decided that was what I wanted to do as a career.

3. What was your first audio visual job?
My first job out of Uni was for Creative Technology Ltd as a Trainee Video Tech.

4. Do you enjoy working with your wife?
I love my working days with Rachael, we understand each other and work together well.

5. How did you and Rachael meet?
Rachael and I met at a mutual friend’s birthday at a local club.

6. How has your business evolved over time?
Brown Cow Audio Visual Ltd has changed from being a business based around my freelance services to hiring kit out to clients and audio visual installations mainly in churches.

7. What has been the biggest challenge?
Covid; we lost all work for almost a year. Following a very bad mental health slump, I have managed to bring the business back to at least the position it was in pre-covid.

8. What’s your least favourite part of your job?
The paperwork! Thankfully, with the support from Rachael, this part is not so bad.

9. What’s been your favourite job so far?
Getting to work alongside some of the nicest and best people I could have hoped to work with. The team I mostly work with are brilliant.

10. What’s your favourite piece of equipment?
The stream deck, meaning just one button press at a time not five or six. Brilliant piece of kit.

11. What’s your favourite food?
Homemade Risotto; it is just a shame I am not home more.

12. Where is your favourite place in the world?
Home in Lower Halstow, Kent.

13. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to spend time at home with Rachael and the kids. Or by the Sea with Rachael and the kids.

14. Favourite colour?
Blue.

15. Any pets?
12 Chickens and one lunatic Dog (Mahoney).

16. If you could speak to your younger self, just starting out, what advice would you give them?
Stick at it – the late nights and long days will pay off.

17. Favourite thing about being a business owner?
Setting my own calendar, working with people and in places of my choice.

18. How did the COVID pandemic affect your business?
We lost all income for almost a year. It did however make me take stock and realise where we wanted to take the business. We are now much more than just my services.

19. What is the future for Brown Cow Audio Visual Ltd?
We are looking to be more of an audio visual hire company alongside the Technician services.

20. What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about starting a small business?
Do it, make the leap. Put the effort in and it definitely will pay off.

What else would you want to know from these audio visual specialists? Let us know.

The post 20 Questions with Sam first appeared on Brown Cow Audio Visual Ltd.

Morning: Preparation and Setup

Very Early: The day begins with a review of the schedule and a quick check of emails for any updates. A small breakfast and a strong coffee on the way helps with the busy day ahead.

Arrive at the venue. The first task is to unload the truck of all the equipment for the day’s event. This includes screens, cameras, lighting, audio gear, and any specific items requested by the client.

Technician starts by setting up the equipment, ensuring all connections are secure and everything is powered up. This involves setting up screens, cameras, adjusting lighting, and configuring audio systems.

After Lunch

The event kicks off. The video technician operates the cameras, ensuring high-quality footage is captured. This requires constant attention to detail, adjusting camera angles, and managing lighting conditions.

The technician also checks in with the event organizers to ensure everything is running smoothly.

The technician continues to monitor the event, making real-time adjustments to the equipment as needed. This includes tweaking audio levels, repositioning cameras, and addressing any technical issues that arise.

The event wraps up. The technician begins the process of breaking down the equipment, carefully packing everything away and ensuring nothing is left behind. This is also a time to gather feedback from the client and note any improvements for future events.

Post-Event Tasks

Wrap up the day by reviewing the schedule for the next day, ensuring all equipment is ready and any necessary maintenance is performed.

Night: Relax and Recharge

Head home to relax and recharge for the next day. This might include watching some TV, reading a book, or spending time with family and friends.
